Swiss TPH Researcher Emma Hodcroft Named by Nature as 1 of 3 People to Watch in 2025
 
Emma Hodcroft, group leader at Swiss TPH and assistant professor at the University of Basel, was named one of three people to watch in shaping science in 2025 by the renowned journal Nature. She was listed alongside Mark Thomson, the next director general of CERN, and US president-elect Donald Trump.

New Digital Health Tool Improves Care for Children in Somalia
 
A new study demonstrates how the digital clinical decision support system ALMANACH (Algorithm for the Management of Childhood Illness) is transforming healthcare for children under five in Somalia. Key findings include a 72% reduction in overall antibiotic prescriptions, falling from 58% to just 16%, and significant improvements in the quality of care.

Financial Support Improves Breastfeeding Success in Lao PDR
 
Mother and child in Lao A new study found that financial support significantly increases exclusive breastfeeding rates among new mothers in Lao PDR. The findings highlight the potential of cash transfers to improve maternal and child health by promoting adherence to the WHO recommendations for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant's life. » Read more

Leading House Africa
 
Leading House Africa Swiss TPH, in collaboration with the University of Basel and the University of Bern, will continue as the Leading House Africa from 2025-2028. In this role, we support joint research projects, innovation initiatives and new opportunities between Switzerland and Sub-Saharan Africa to address some of the most pressing societal issues. » Read more
 
Enhancing Palliative Care in Lao PDR
 
A pioneering project, implemented by Swiss TPH with regional partners and funded by Krebsforschung Schweiz, is using tools such as verbal autopsy to assess gaps in palliative care and the burden of severe health-related suffering among cancer patients in Lao PDR. Findings will inform policy development to integrate palliative care into communities and health facilities, supporting Lao PDR's National Multisectoral Action Plan on NCDs and prioritising compassionate, evidence-based care. » Read more
 
 
Building Public Health Resilience in Ukraine
 
Health experts from Ukraine visting Swiss TPH As part of the USAID-funded PHS R&R project, Ukrainian health experts visited Switzerland to explore advanced diagnostic technologies, integrated health approaches and disease surveillance at leading Swiss institutes for parasitology and entomology. The exchange enhances Ukraine’s capacity for surveillance of parasitic and vector-borne disease. » Read more
 
New Therapy for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis
 
The project team is visiting a study site in South Africa Drug resistance in TB is a global health problem and causes great suffering to those affected. The DRTB-HDT project is evaluating two therapies to improve treatment outcomes for rifampicin-resistant TB. To date, the clinical trial has enrolled 280 patients in Moldova, Georgia, Romania, Mozambique and South Africa. If successful, it could lead to new treatments that improve recovery and reduce the risk of lifelong disability. » Read more
