Legionella cases are increasing in Switzerland – why better surveillance matters
| |
Reported cases of Legionnaires’ disease have increased in Switzerland in recent years, drawing renewed attention following the current cluster in Basel-Stadt. Although the disease remains rare and the overall risk for healthy people is low, rapid detection and effective surveillance are essential to identify outbreaks and prevent further infections. Swiss TPH researchers are working with partners across Switzerland to improve diagnosis, strengthen surveillance and use genomic analysis to trace sources of infection. Better case reporting, genetic characterisation of bacteria and coordinated national data sharing could help detect clusters earlier and support more targeted public health responses.
